Our Voices Helped Pass the Water for the World Act!
Faiths for Safe Water helped bring the faith voice together to help pass the Senator Paul Simon Water for the World Act of 2014, Public Law 113-289. On December 19, 2014, President Obama signed it into law. Influential and diverse faith leaders joined voices in support of passage. It was among the last acts of the 113th Congress. The bipartisan legislation was endorsed by nearly 80 non-governmental and faith-based organizations. It was passed unanimously by the 113th Congress. Water for the World recognizes the importance of WASH programs to poverty reduction, global health, and U.S. national security; and called for improved agency coordination so U.S. investments would be strategic, efficient and impactful.
A lot has happened since that time.
Millions more people gained access to safe and sustainable water; global action uncovered the crisis of a lack of WASH in healthcare facilities; progress was made to get students water and toilets in school
And then in 2025, U.S. foreign aid was demolished and funding for global WASH work was radically cut in violation of the Water for the World Act.
We did it once, we can do it again.
Now is not the time to give up but to doubledown to make sure our faith-based organizations prioritize WASH development.
Why? Because people still thirst.
